On Thursday 19th April one of our cats, an old and slightly battered
tabby called Elvis popped out for a morning stroll shortly after
breakfast. Given that he has undertaken some lengthy wanders in the
past, we were not too concerned when he did not return for his dinner
that evening. However, by the following day and particularly in light of
the heavy and continual rain, we began to get concerned. We comforted
ourselves with the hope that he was far from home when the rain began
and perhaps had sought shelter rather than face a soaking on the walk
back to his waiting bed, food and family.
By the weekend we were pretty miserable and commenced door-to-door
searches and long walks across the fields to look for him, but to no
avail. He seemed to have simply vanished that morning and we began to
fear that we would never know his fate.
This morning (Monday 23rd April), following calls to the local vets and
his microchip company, we discovered that our dear little friend had
been involved in a road accident and had been killed on that Thursday
morning, shortly after leaving home it seems. We were only able to learn
the truth because of the actions of both the driver and another lady,
who kindly attempted to drive Elvis to Woodside Road Veterinary Surgery
for treatment. We learned that he had sadly passed away en-route,
providing us with some comfort that he did not at least suffer for long.
Despite our sadness, we were touched by the fact that, not one, but two
people were troubled enough to take these efforts in an attempt to help
our little old man. Because of this kindness we do not have to continue
fruitless searching up and down the village, or imagine him in pain or
lost somewhere.
I hope that our thanks reach those involved and that these words might
encourage others to act in the same manner if they are ever in a similar
situation.

John Pocock is the William Lacey Group Senior Site Manager at their Woodside Copse development. John, a carpenter and joiner by trade, has been responsible for the construction of a wide variety of both new homes and commercial projects.
The Woodside Copse development comprises the rebuilding of the Chiddingfold Club and the construction of nine new homes for sale and four affordable homes for the English Rural Housing Association.
Progress on the Club is well under way, the foundations are in position with the steel frame due for erection before Christmas, and the first roofs have been pitched on the new homes.
Masella Coupe, have been appointed as the selling agents and they will have further details of the development during early January.

Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience our building work may have caused to visitors to The Surgery in Ridgley Road. We have erected new signage to direct traffic, we hope this will minimise any problems.

Litter Blitz and Shop Local Day. We live in a lovely village and keeping it tidy is made easier and fun if we all do it together. Stay in the village, help with the litter blitz for an hour or two, and watch out for special offers in our local shops. If we all spent just 5% of our usual shopping budget in the village, we would better support the shopkeepers we have, and maybe encourage a few more.
Skills Swap Day 11am to 4pm (Chiddingfold Village Hall) Pop in and find out about the wealth of skills we have right here in Chiddingfold. You might want to try your hand at throwing a pot on a potter’s wheel, or take a closer look at keeping bees. Throughout the day will be short talks on topics from making compost to keeping chickens at home. And there will be a choice of home-cooked food for lunch, crafts to keep children entertained, and locally produced food, crafts and more for sale. Proceeds from this event will be donated to Skillway, a Godalming based charity that aims to help teenagers succeed through teaching workshop skills.

Over the past 10 years, costs in the bus industry have been rising much faster than general inflation. Many main bus services, including those in towns, have stopped being commercially viable, requiring Surrey County Council to spend much more in order to keep the network running.
Many of the 240 or so bus services in Surrey require some degree of financial support. In 2001/2 the cost to us was around £4million. By 2009 we were giving over £11million net support each year. This amount of subsidy was continuing to rise and would become unaffordable over the coming years due to the budget pressures we are facing.
The Bus Review gives us an opportunity to take a fresh look at the whole network, where people are travelling to and how often. This means we can focus our investment on the areas or travel opportunities where it is needed the most.

Operating mainly without financial support from Surrey County Council, but some subsidy required for section between Chiddingfold and Haslemere
The Chiddingfold to Haslemere section of route sees very few passengers. On a commercial basis, only the Guildford to Milford section is considered viable. The first choice for Stagecoach could be to run two buses per hour between Guildford and Milford (four per hour between Guildford and Godalming in combination with service 92), with an extension to Witley with financial support from Surrey County Council. At least one of these buses per hour might extend to Chiddingfold.
If this proposal was adopted, between Milford and Witley one bus per hour could run via Petworth Road and one per hour via Haslemere Road, Gasden Lane and Wheeler Lane.
A demand-responsive dial-a-ride service could cover as required the area south of Chiddingfold, linking to Haslemere and Godalming.
On Sundays there would be an option to consider restoring a service, either every hour or every two hours between 0900 and 1800 hrs, between Chiddingfold and Guildford via Eashing Lane Estate and Aarons Hill. Alternatively, a bus might run every hour between Milford and Guildford via Eashing Lane. The implementation of any of these options would depend on overall affordability within the bus support budget.

The Air Ambulance service in Kent, Surrey and Sussex costs around £ 3
million annually to stay airborne. Receiving no funding from the Government
or the National Lottery the charity is entirely dependent upon the generosity
of the public to support the two helicopters, based at Marden and Dunsfold. October 18, 2011
Surrey Air Ambulance is a charity which relies almost entirely on public donations and receives no National Lottery funding.
The helicopter carries a specialist doctor and Critical Care Paramedic who can carry out advanced medical procedures at the scene, giving patients the best chance and quality of survival.

shot on location in Chiddingfold in 1945. Based on a successful play by Daphne du Maurier, and starring Michael Redgrave, Valerie Hobson and Flora Robson, The Years Between is a wartime melodrama about a young woman who turns to politics after the reported death in action of her soldier M.P. husband.
As well as featuring many local landmarks the film includes footage of the genuine VJ day celebrations in the village including some of the earliest recorded scenes of Chiddingfold's famous bonfire. You may even spot former village residents amongst the extras.
The screening will be accompanied by an exhibition of research on the film, its Oscar-winning production team and their relationship with the village, complete with reflections and interviews from those who were there. There will also be a 1940's costume competition and a wide variety of refreshments.

By now I hope you appreciate that we have a very special legacy in these bells, and I do hope that the village is a much better place for having them. (It would be a very sad thing to NOT have them surely!)
However, I, and the other bell ringers, are mindful that our ringing is intrusive,
(loud).
Despite our best efforts, there are occasions when the music is not at it's
best, particularly when practice and learners are involved! Whilst we have
some sound-control, the sound of the bells does reach parts that other music
does not!
So I am asking the village, and anyone else affected, to let me know your views - More

Concerning the Governments plans to change the NHS, it will lead to tears!
This talk of reducing bureaucracy and improving efficiency . well there could be efficiency improvements in the NHS but breaking it up will not help with economies of scale,
and the NHS is one of the least bureaucratic in the world!
So breaking it up and copying the American example will not work
The Conservative’s have upset many people in the past.
They were not forgiven for the unemployment in the 1930’s and called the party of unemployment in the 1980’s that and the closure of ship yards, steel works, and coal mines upset many people but they were not conservative voters
The thing with the health service we all use it and if it goes wrong it won’t just be poor people upset and memories last a long time and get passed down generations
So Beware
